Sorry all, I have been slacking in posting up awesome vegan tattoos for such an embarrassingly long time I am not even going to offer an explanation or excuse, but instead I am just going to post some really cool vegan tattoos this week that have been filling up the mail box for quite some time. If you have a fresh new vegan tattoo you would like to share with you friends and fellow vegans then feel free to send them in to vegantattoos at gmail dot com.

Everyone has their first tattoo experience and Andrea from Italy chose to express his right to bare his arm with a simple and beautiful statement. Andrea says he is planing on getting many other tattoos in the future and asked for your help with ideas for animal rights themed tattoos so feel free to leave suggestions in the comments for him!

The kind of arms you want in a food fight.

Don’t worry Andrea, we think you are totally on the right track with this lovely first tattoo!

Our next contributor Will from Pittsburgh, PA just wanted to show us a pic of his first tattoo. Another fine and bold choice for a first tattoo!

An Herbivore is worn

Will has been vegan for 2 years and veg for 8. Thanks for sending it in and most importantly thanks for being vegan!

Our last well armed vegans are a dynamic duo who got essentially matching tattoos at Scapegoat Tattoo in Portland, OR.

Well armed vegan duo

James says “Hey there, I’m the guy Brian Wilson submitted with the 1/4 sleeve Sea Shepherd tattoo. Before that one, my girlfriend and I got “matching” tattoos saying “vegan”, also at Scapegoat.” We think Brian does great work, check out their website and the chilling poster he designed to benefit the relief efforts on the Gulf. Thanks a bunch for sending this awesome double feature and most importantly thanks for being vegan!

And that goes for everyone who has sent in pictures, emails, comments and suggestions; thanks a bunch and have an awesome week!

Its the perfect time of year to turn people on to awesome vegan food for the holidays, and I hope everyone is having a bunch of luck with that and having a good time. I have been having a great time avoiding work and playing games online for the last couple of days, but I figured I would share a newer submission that I got a couple of days ago.

Our next contributor Leigh had this lovely work done by vegan artist Danielle Distefano of Only You Tattoo in Atlanta, GA and had the following to say about her darling little dear:

”I decided on a deer tattoo while on a road trip with my husband. We were driving to upstate New York to exhibit at a vegetarian festival, and along the way we saw several deer hanging out near the highway. It reminded me of how hunters try to justify killing these beautiful animals because they seem to think it’s their duty to control the deer population in order to avoid situations like deer running out into the road and causing damage to cars, or eating plants in people’s yards. The idea that humans have the right to kill another species simply because they are inconvenient to our sprawling urban and suburban living is just sad to me.

Oh Deer!

Danielle at Only You Tattoo created my beautiful little fawn with all vegan inks. I just love it!”

I must say we love it too; the deer, the ornate frame, and little heart are adorable. What a sweet tribute to a beautiful animal! I think everyone could stand to think a bit about the animals they pass by every day, if not just to enjoy their company a bit.

Its really great to see that there are so many vegan tattoo artists around! Thanks a bunch for being vegan and helping other vegans out by using vegan inks and techniques.

Thanks for stopping by everyone! If we don’t see before then have a happy and safe new year and most importantly, thanks for being vegan!

Our next contributor wrote the following about her lovely vegan tattoo:

“Hi, my name is Maggie! This is my vegan tattoo. I got it at 3 Kings in Brooklyn the day before my 19th birthday. All vegan ink of course. I wanted to make a statement about my commitment to the vegan lifestyle and animal rights in general.”

Hello vegans and aspiring vegans, hows it going? I’ve been recovering from watching the Foul Play movie by Mercy for Animals on Sunday at Studio 35. Definitely not a movie that you should get popcorn for. It was pretty crushing watching all those chickens jammed up together in battery cages and really I can’t imagine how someone could keep eating meat after seeing it. The movie does a good job of adding a little positivity and and hope, showing some cool sanctuary footage and happy chickens along with the suffering caged ones.

Our next contributor has a similarly awesome and rather depressing message to share about us about a lucky little monkey who got rescued by the good old ALF. Not the cat eater from space guys, but the Animal Liberation Front. They used to be all over the news when I was young and I always thought they were awesome! Our contributor Anna clearly thinks they rock as well and has the following to say about her newish vegan tattoo:

Nothing funny to say about vivisection, yuck

“This is a pretty new tattoo but its on a vegan (me) tattooed by a vegan (ryan mason from scapegoat tattoo) against animal cruelty and vivisection. I am surprised at how few people (including vegans) are familiar with britches the monkey. I find his story heart breaking and so far having this tattoo has giving me the opportunity to share it with others…. Below his portrait there’s a quote that reads none so blind as those who will not see. I figured that summed up my feelings on vivisection and animal cruelty pretty accurately.”

Don't sew on monkeys

Anna also included a link to a little video that tells the tale of Britches:

Britches the unlucky / lucky baby monkey

Who ever decided that they should sew the monkeys face should probably not ever be allowed to be around animals and children. Also, maybe not sewing materials or staplers. WTF?

Thanks for putting up with my ramblings today everyone, thanks for checking out this tattoo and most importantly thanks for being vegan!

I have to admit I love vegans the most out of all people. That means you! But seriously if you live in a big city anymore its just amazing and so easy to be a vegan. Its not like you have to order the sad wilty salad or worry about explaining your dietary restrictions to a waitron. People just know what vegans are now and if you asked them and they could bring themselves to admit it, they would tell you how jealous they are of us!

I just got back from visiting my very awesome-but-not-vegan mom and family in Washington D.C. and we had some of the most incredible vegan adventures. From Vegetate to Sticky Fingers Bakery or even a bunch of vegan options at Asylum, for the first time ever they were all excited about me dragging them around to places I could eat and the options were truly amazing. This is not a vegan food blog or anything so I am not going to go on and on but I have to admit I am a bit sad to be back here in Columbus with our very limited choice of strictly vegetarian and vegan restarants. Anyways, you D.C. metro vegans are so lucky I am not even going to thank you for being vegan any more… jk you guys are awesome too, thanks!

Our next excellent vegan contributor Dag comes from Bethesda, Maryland; right there in the D.C. area. Dag writes:

“The tattoo is of Huginn and Muninn, Odin’s two ravens. I’ve always loved watching ravens and crows, and can’t understand why such intelligent birds are hated and killed for being “pests”.”

Huginn & Muginn

A lovely and very punk depiction of some beautiful animals. Dag’s first tattoo was just as cool:

Vegan wrist

Dag got the crows inked at Bethesda Tattoo in Bethesda, MD by Steve Labofish. Dag also mentioned that Steve and the shop were very knowledgeable about vegan inks and tattooing so this might be a great place to go if you are looking for some work and live in that area.

Anyways that all we have for this installment fo the Vegan Tattoos blog. Be sure to check back next week when we showcase another awesome vegans tattoo. Thanks for stopping by and most importantly thanks for being vegan!

Our next contributor Angela got this tattoo on her wrist in a font taken from R. Crumb’s “The Sweeter Side of R. Crumb”.

Hello vegans and friends, hope you’ve had a lovely time since you’ve last visited. I have been super busy lately and have been real slack about bringing you more cool vegan tattoos on awesome vegans.

Our next tattoo comes from Becca who says:

“The number one comment I get when people see my wrist tattoos is ‘What, in case you forget?’… And yes, in a way they are. They’re a reminder of the commitment I’ve made to the animals and to myself, lest I ever lose sight of why I’m vegan.”

“I got this first one in Las Vegas in November of 2007 from a vegan tattoo artist at a Vegan Freak meetup, using vegan inks. I wanted a visible “vegan” tattoo, but I worked in corporate hell so I didn’t want it to be glaringly obvious. My compromise – got the tattoo on my wrist, but used white ink. I really like the effect, similar to scarification.”

This one for you

“I knew almost immediately after getting the first one that I wanted another one on my right wrist, and this spring I finally got the second one. This one was done by Annie Mess in Austin in April of this year (2009), also using vegan inks. It’s not entirely finished healing, and will look much like the first one after a few more months.”

This one for me

I have always loved these white ink tattoos for very similar reasons, they are a bit of a shock when you notice them too, an inky secret unconvered.

Anyhow, way to go Becca! Thanks for your excellent contribution and thanks for being vegan!

“i got my cruelty-free bunny 2 years ago in queenstown, new zealand. i really love it, not just for its meaning and simplicity, but for the conversations it inspires.”

Hey all welcome to another fantastic post on the vegan tattoos blog.

Our next post is sweet, coming from vegan tattoo artist extraordinaire, Brian from Scapegoat Tattoo in Portland, Oregon. Brian had the following excellent story about a tattoo that he did:

“A fine vegan gentleman by the name of James Taylor (yep, James Taylor got tattooed by Brian Wilson…) called me from sunny California and wanted a Sea Shepherd tattoo. He said that were pretty much bad asses and he wanted to show his thanks for what they were doing in a tattoo. And the rest was left up to me. I came up with this… A skully embodiment of Poseidon meets Sea Shepherd flag destroying the Yushin Maru whaling “research” ship!

Sea Shepherd says "Research THIS"

All I can say is wow, that’s a pretty heavy tattoo! Way to throw the middle finger up to whaling!

I think I will let Brian sum it up for us:

“I’ll try and send more in the future. Thanks for making this site! Thank you everyone who’s gotten or is getting tattooed! And as they say here, Thanks for being vegan!”
